Board President’s Latest News
July 21, 2010
"I wanted to let you know that Tom Lockett passed away peacefully last night. I know Eddie Ratcliff has been keeping everyone updated on Tom’s condition, but he is on the road to Arkansas. The services will be Saturday, July 24th at 4:00 PM, Crossroads Community Church, Harrison AR. Thanks for all the prayers that have been sent on Tom’s behalf. He is at peace now." (Message sent from Delores McDole)
Tom was a US Marine who joined Run For The Wall over 8 years ago and served as Road Guard on Central Route the last several years. Mike McDole first met him when Tom road in the Missing Man position as an FNG. Tom Lockett was the first RFTW participant that Mike met who was also a "Tanker" in Vietnam. Mike McDole is with the family now and Delores, Ross Currie, Eddie Ratcliff and others are headed towards Arkansas.
Delores said she got airline tickets to Little Rock much cheaper than trying to fly into Springfield, MO, or Fayettville. But these are the 3 airports in the area. Little Rock is less than 150 miles from Harrison.

Judy Cockrum for Ron Young, President, RFTW, Inc.
June 14, 2010
First, I want to thank everyone who helped make RFTW 2010 such a success.
Ray “Too Tall” McDowell and Arnie “Postmaster” Swift are at the head of that very long list of volunteers. Together with their leadership teams, they led the Southern and the Central Route riders safely across the country to accomplish our Mission at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. And they did it with grace, with clarity, and with style. The other members of the Board of Directors: Mike McDole, Ron Young, Judy Cockrum, Ross Currie, Ted Riedel, and Michael Mendell worked year-round to put everything in place for the Run. They struggled with endless complexity and kept us all on course. I am honored to have worked and ridden in the company of such fine people. The State Coordinators labored to organize the events, the fuel stops, the hotels, and the presence of those wonderful “friends on the bridge” in their states. These folks are our grassroots representatives working all year to connect RFTW with these communities and they deserve our respect and appreciation. And here is a special thanks to the FNGs who came to RFTW for so many different reasons. Whether they were Vietnam veterans, Gulf War veterans, Afghanistan veterans, or serving on active duty today; their presence gave us purpose as we honored all of America’s warriors. Welcome home and welcome to the Run! Looking ahead to next year, the following route leadership appointments have been finalized: .Central Route Coordinator: Harry “Attitude” Steelman .Southern Route Coordinator: Richard “Preacher” Moore The Assistant Route Coordinator and the Road Guard Captain appointments for each Route will be finalized on July 1, 2010. Three members of the Board of Directors have completed their terms and are stepping down from the Board. They are Mike “Tanker” McDole, John “Ice Scout” King, and Michael “Enigma” Mendell. In their stead, Ray “Too Tall” McDowell, John “Hardcharger” Barker, and Daryl “Top” Neil have been elected to begin new three-year terms on the Board of Directors. Congratulations to each of them! Thank you again everyone. I am honored to have ridden with you. John “Ice Scout” King, Jr.

Run For Them All
At both the Angel Fire and the Kerrville Reunion Rider’s Forums, we heard many comments about the need to reach out to the veterans of today’s wars. Many riders spoke about how important it was that we do all we could to open the doors of Run For The Wall to these men and women.
Acting upon this, we made some changes to the website home page and we also emphasized the importance of personal outreach in the newsletter and on the forum.
Now, another step has been taken. An individual who wishes to remain anonymous, has made a commitment to donate $1,500 per year for the next four years with that money being used to help Global War on Terrorism veterans participate in RFTW.
The Board has agreed to match this donation with another $1,500 from our treasury. This Board commitment is consistent with the way we have given “benevolence” gifts to organizations helping homeless veterans, the families of deployed service personnel, and our wounded warriors the last two years. Where we find we have some extra money, the Board prefers to use it to help our needy brothers and sisters.
At the annual face-to-face meeting this Fall, the Board will develop guidelines for the use of this money during the 2011 Run. We want to be sure the money is used as intended and that all eligible veterans have a chance to ask for help.
In the meantime, we have developed a patch “Run For Them All”, which will be sold in Rancho Cucamonga. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these patches will go to this fund. If enough participants buy a patch, we may even be able to help some younger veterans join us this year.
I am putting this information out now because it is important to everyone that we be completely clear about how we use our monies. RFTW was started to honor and help Vietnam veterans and we will always be true to that Mission. It is also important that we extend a helping hand to the men and women who are serving our nation today.
Board of Directors Positions
In June, there will be three new Directors appointed to the Board of Directors.
If you are interested in being considered for one of these positions, please make your interest known by contacting any current Board member.
Thank You & Ride Safe,
John “Ice Scout” King, Jr.

On-line merchandise sales will shut down April 15 as Ted Riedel will be loading the merchandise trailers for movement to California. Sales will reopen on Monday, May 17 in Rancho Cucamonga.
The 2010 Board of Directors annual meeting will take place during the Angel Fire reunion September 3 - 6. The Board will conduct a Riders Forum at both Angel Fire and at Kerrville in 2010.
April 5, 2010
Greetings, We are on the eve of departure. Run For the Wall XXII will roll out of Rancho Cucamonga, California on Wednesday, May 19 on our way to Washington, D.C.
Everyone is eager to begin. It’s been a long and harsh Winter. We have all been cooped up for much too long!
The Run’s organizational work is almost finished. The Route Coordinators have assembled their teams and hammered out their procedures. The riders have made their plans, booked their hotel rooms, and readied their bikes.
The website forum has been very active with lots of good information covering everything from riding formations to fuel stop procedures; all with a lot of humor.
As April unfolds, its time to get on the bike and shake off the winter blues. Get out on the highway and accumulate some miles. Good riding sense says to practice your emergency procedures. Take an MSF course if you can. We can all use an annual refresher and anything we do to improve our safety is a smart move.
Now is the time to remember that we ride for those who cannot. Postings on the forum have introduced us to riders who will be with us to honor family members as well as our fallen comrades. FNGs have talked about how much being part of the Run means to them; for many, a once in a lifetime adventure.
Remember too those who have fallen in our nation’s current wars. We honor our sons and daughters who have stood for us in Iraq and Afghanistan just as we honor our brothers and sisters who served in Vietnam.
As a family, we honor all of America’s warriors.
Remember too, the countless thousands of ordinary Americans who are waiting for us as we travel across this wonderful country. In the small towns we visit, school children are preparing their own special celebration for us. In the VA hospitals, patients and staff alike are looking at the calendar and grinning in joyful anticipation. And in lonely corners of the country, folks are figuring out just when we will pass by their nearest freeway overpass so they can be there to salute us on our way.
Truly, we have been given a noble duty to discharge and in this, we are blessed.
Get Ready!! It’s almost time to ride!!

Our DC Coordinator, John Gosser, reports that there are about 20 rooms still available at the Westin Hotel in DC and that all of the other hotels in the immediate area are full.
March 11, 2010
For those of you who plan way ahead, here are the dates for the 2010 Angel Fire and Kerrville reunions
Angel Fire: September 3 -- 6
Kerrville: September 17 -- 19
The reunions will be based out of the same hotels we have used before; The Lodge in Angel Fire (575) 377-6401 and the Y-O Resort in Kerrville. Each will offer lodging discounts for the RFTW Reunion. More detail on events and activities will be posted later this Spring.
The Board of Directors will hold its annual face-to-face meeting at Angel Fire. Normally, we rotate this meeting between the two sites and the meeting would be held in Kerrville this year; however, schedule conflicts require us to meet again in Angel Fire. Rider Forums will be conducted at both reunions as usual.
Thank You & Ride Safe
March 10, 2010
Good Morning,
The detailed 2010 itineraries for both routes are posted on the website for your use.
This is the culmination of the planning done by the two Route Coordinators; Ray and Arnie, their Assistant Route Coordinators, Road Guard Captains and many other volunteers especially the nineteen State Coordinators. Be sure to thank them for a job well done.
Online merchandise sales will stop on April 15th. Ted Reidel will start loading everything in the trailer for movement to California at that time. If you want your goods to arrive before we meet in Rancho Cucamonga, order now.
Over 400 people have registered on-line. Getting this done now will make the process in Rancho Cucamonga easier for everyone.
Spring weather is here and its time to start riding again. Get your bike and yourself in shape for the Run. It is almost time to begin.
Thank you and ride safe!
February 10, 2010
Good Morning Everyone,
We have 99 days and a wake up till RFTW XXII rolls out of Rancho Cucamonga on May 19 on our way to Washington D.C. Many of us are still buried in the snow and ice across the country, but its time to start getting the bike serviced, make your motel & camping reservations, and take care of many other details.
While you’re busy with all of this, don’t forget to be getting physically ready. The Run will demand all of your ability and endurance. A little exercise now will pay off later. This is probably the most basic thing you can do to assure your own safety.
300+ riders have already signed up using the online registration and paid their one-time $10 fee. The Rancho Cucamonga and D.C. hotels as well as those across the country are filling up. In spite of the weather and the lousy economy, it looks like we can expect 1,700 or so riders to register; just like last year.
The 2010 tee shirts and other merchandise like the new sleeveless denim shirt are now available for online ordering. There is a new toll-free number, 1-877-741-7389, for you to use. The same items available online will be stocked in each route’s merchandise trailer during the Run. This year’s Run pin has the date added to it; and even though we had 20,000 of the pins made, they always sell out quickly. It’s a good idea to buy items like the back patches and have them sewn on now; just one less thing to have to do in California or wherever you plan to join.
Riders have been asking when the detailed daily itinerary will be published. This is the largest and most complex planning document for the Run. Our goal is to publish it on the website by March 1. We realize that riders are eager for the information and you can be sure that the Route Coordinators and their staff are working on it.
When we publish the two route itineraries, we want them to be as complete and accurate as possible. With the winter weather, some of the State Coordinators haven’t been able to personally verify the details for each fuel and meal stop in their states yet.
There will be a new FNG Orientation meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 18 in Rancho Cucamonga for the Central and the Southern Routes. Each Route Coordinator and his leadership will meet with the FNGs riding that route and brief you on organization and procedures, riding formation, hand signals, and other details. The idea is to answer your questions and make sure you know what to expect from your leaders and what they expect from you.
Just like every year, there has been a lot of discussion about the pros and cons of riding staggered or side-by-side in the platoon formations. While each rider is ultimately responsible for their own safety, remember that the Coordinator’s and their staff have the same priority, everyone completing the Run safely. All of their planning and all of their operational decisions are directed towards that goal. Once we get underway, it may take a day or two for each rider to settle in and find their place in the platoons, but if you follow the leader’s instructions and use some common sense, the ride will go smoothly and safely.
Remember too, our Road Guards are some of the most experienced riders on the Run. Their job is to guide the pack safely in all weather and road conditions. Their’s is the most hazardous job on the Run. Listen to what they say and follow their instructions.
After the Run begins, take the opportunity to get to know the Road Guards on your route, talk to them when you can, ask questions and learn from them. They deserve considerable respect from all of us for what they do so don’t forget to thank them every chance you have.
There is a lot of information available on the Forum. For the newcomers, sort through the FAQs and the different threads and you will find answers to almost any question you might have. If not, post your question and other riders will respond.
All of this operational stuff is important, but remember the point of the Run is the Mission. We ride to honor all veterans, to demand accountability for our MIAs, and to show support for those who are serving our nation around the world. This is serious business; thousands of people turn out to welcome us as we go across the nation because we represent them and their values and hopes.
Many of you have been reaching out to young veterans and distributing the flyer that is available on the website. Thank you and keep it up. We want these folks to learn about the Run and feel welcome to join us.
This past weekend, my family and I joined a group of RFTW folks in Phoenix to work at the Arizona Veterans Stand Down. Almost 1,000 homeless veterans came in and were helped with everything from a haircut, a pair of new shoes and clothing, or an chance to see a judge and have their legal issues cleaned up so they could be issued a new driver’s license.
What impressed me the most was how much they appreciated simple signs of respect such as hearing someone say “Thank You for Serving” or “Welcome Home” while shaking their hand. These men and women stepped up when our nation called and have since fallen on hard times. I believe they too will be on the Run with us in spirit as “we ride for those who cannot”.
Thank you, stay warm and ride safely.

Thanks
Happy 2010 to each of you! Many of us are winter-bound, the bikes are put away and some are already getting cabin fever. That’s all the more reason to be getting ready for the Run!
RFTW XXII leaves Rancho Cucamonga on May 19th. That’s only four months away.
So here is where we are right now. Hundreds of riders have already made their hotel reservations and registered online.
The State Coordinators are ironing out the route details in their areas and the detailed itinerary will be published on the website by February 28.
The 2010 merchandise will be available for on-line purchase by the end of January. This year’s run pin will have a “2010” rocker added. Also, there is a new toll-free number to use when ordering. It is 1-877-741-RFTW (7389).
Our Route Coordinators, Ray McDowell and Arnie Swift, still need volunteers for some of their support jobs. There are lots of details to be squared away during the Run and workers are always in demand. Every job is important. Let Ray and Arnie know how you can help.
Earning an All The Way patch is a big achievement and it is highly respected by other riders everywhere.
However, many riders have a hard time getting away for the 3 weeks it take to go cross country and then return home. Sometimes, job and family responsibilities limit the time we have available.
Don’t let this stop you from participating! Think of RFTW as 10 one-day rides and join in as you can. Go as far as your time permits, see for yourself what RFTW is about, and get to know the people. Then, plan to join again the following year and go a little further.
Eventually, you will make the entire Run from California to DC. Most of us who have been with the Run awhile started this way. You can too!
Part of our Mission is to promote healing among ALL veterans. Our nation has been at war for over a decade. Countless young men and women have answered this call to service. Whether they are currently on active duty or have completed their tour, the issues which they face as they go on with their lives are no different than those which confronted Vietnam veterans.
At our reunions and on our forum, we have talked about the importance of including these veterans in our family. Sometimes though, it is difficult to know just how to make this happen. After all, we are the old guys and sometimes we don’t connect easily to different generations.
Each of us can help. Direct and personal contact is always the best way to communicate. When you talk with younger veterans who ride, they will likely ask about the Run. Share your experiences with them, listen to their stories, and invite them to ride with us.
Both the Central and the Southern Routes travel past numerous military installations. Find a way to involve those commands; ask them to provide a color guard to welcome the Run and spread the word on base so the troops who want to ride with us can plan ahead. These are just a couple of the things each of us can do to reach out to our younger brothers and sisters.
Imagine how good it will feel to help bring one more rider into the family. I encourage each of you to reach out and welcome these heroes home.
Thank You & Ride Safe
Greetings; here are some of the things that have been happening with RFTW.
1. The Route Coordinators have filled most of their leadership positions and they are now working on the hotel arrangements and the detailed route itineraries.
2. We will publish the hotel list on the website after December 1.
Each overnight stop will have a headquarters hotel and at least one backup. Camping information will be provided where available.
Each rider is responsible for making their own hotel reservations. The hotels are selected based on price and easy access for the riders. We encourage you to use them. They want our business and are giving some discounts to help our riders. This is very important in the DC area where we risk losing those savings if we don’t use all of the rooms blocked out for RFTW.
The hotels will take reservations on a first-come, first-served basis. Begin making your reservations early. If the HQ hotel is full, use the back-up. If you run into other problems, let us know.
3. The detailed daily itinerary will be published in March. There are some changes on each route this year; mostly with fuel stops. 4. We will have on-line registration available again this year. Instructions and forms will be published on the website in December. The registration fee will stay at $10 per person.
5. In 2008, the Board started making what we call “benevolence gifts” to charities whose mission is to help veterans in ways that we cannot.
There are two principles guiding us here. First, RFTW has always worked hard to be self-sufficient. We think it is better to sell our own merchandise then to ask for a handout. Second, because we are financially solvent, we think we are obliged to use some of our money to help other veterans who are not so fortunate.
In 2008, we gave $10,000 to four charitable organizations who help veterans. These charities were recommended by the Route leadership and approved by the Board.
In 2009, we are able to give the same amount again. Each of these charities will receive $2,500 to help support their veteran’s service programs. These recipients are:
.The David Westphall Veterans Foundation in Angel Fire, New Mexico.
.Snowball Express in Costa Mesa, California.
.US Vets – Phoenix, Arizona Stand Down.
.Mission M-25 in Amarillo, Texas.
Thats it for now. Thank you and ride safe.
Miss Anne Perry is coordinating our public information efforts. She has asked for help obtaining photographs of the Central Route activities during the 2009 Run. If you can, please help her with this project.
"In order to create the 2010 Mission video, we need to have more high-quality photos taken on the Central Route in 2009. If you took photos, please select your best ones (such as photos of supporters on overpasses, current military personnel...especially those riding with the pack..., veterans greeting veterans at VAMC stops, supporters at breakfast, lunch, and dinner stops, salutes and/or wreath laying at memorials, the column of riders, etc.). Send them in original format (they need to be approximately 6x4" or 4x6" at 300 resolution, so she can resize them), 2-3 at a time, to aperry315@gmail.com . Anne Perry is again creating the video and is relying on CR participants to provide these photos. Please submit photos BY SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17. The quality of the video will depend upon your response...we’re counting on YOU! Thank you!"
RFTW Angel Fire Reunion
This Labor Day weekend, over 100 of the RFTW family came together in Angel Fire for the first reunion of the year. Monte and Linda Apodaca did a great job organizing the hotel and the events held at the Memorial. Many thanks to them for doing this for us.
Now known as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park, the Monument is a place of reunion, reflection, healing, and sharing of experiences. RFTW has stopped here for many years and it has a special place in all our hearts.
Traditionally, the Board of Directors holds its annual face-to-face meeting at one of the reunions, rotating between Angel Fire and Kerrville. The Board also conducts an open rider’s forum where any and all questions are asked and answered.
This year, the two Route Coordinators: Ray McDowell and Arnie Swift, set in on the entire Board meeting. They were joined by their Assistant Route Coordinators: Richard Moore and Harry Steelman for the afternoon sessions on route planning.
Here are some of the business items discussed:
RFTW has $72,000 in the bank. The detailed annual financial statements will be published in the October newsletter by Treasurer Michael Mendell. He is also working with Ted Riedel, the Merchandise Director and the finance team volunteers to keep our money secure and accountable during the Run.
Ross Currie, Director of Operations and Training is reviewing the SOP and looking for ways to improve this information sharing process to help route leadership improve overall rider safety. He is also working with the two Road Guard Captains to help them recruit and train new Road Guards.
Judy Cockrum, our Secretary, is overseeing the registration process and will be ready to open the online registration site in December.
Ron Young, our Risk Management Director is working with the AMA on our insurance policy as well as guiding the overall process of reducing our liability exposure.
Both Route Coordinators are working with their State Coordinators to finalize the schedule of fuel, ceremonial, and overnight stops on each route. We want to publish the lodging list in December and have the final itinerary ready for printing in March, 2010.
There will be some changes on each route. Some fuel stops are no longer able to accommodate the number of bikes we bring safely and efficiently. In particular, we are looking for an alternative to the stop at Toms Brook, Virginia which has become extremely congested.
RFTW has applied for a parking permit at the National Mall for Friday, May 28. If approved, we will be able to do more specific planning for our arrival in Washington, DC. Without a permit and a secure place to park, we cannot take our large number of bikes directly to the Wall on Friday. This was also discussed at the Rider’s Forum in some detail. As it stands, the Board is working to make this happen safely and legally.
Remember, we have been denied a parking permit for Friday afternoon every year since 2005. The National Park Service has not been encouraging. To them, we are just another large traffic problem regardless of our true purpose. Certainly, it is our right as citizens and as veterans to assemble at our memorial. It is also our responsibility to obey the law and to ensure that all of our riders, FNGs or veterans, are able to arrive at the Wall safely and without interruption by the Park Police.
One way or another, we will settle this question in the next few months so that the detailed route schedule and plans can be finalized.
Another item that came up at the Rider’s Forum was ways to make RFTW more accessible to the young veterans of our current wars.
The final event of the reunion was a church service at the Memorial Chapel on Sunday morning. It was a fitting close to a wonderful weekend of work and fellowship. I think everyone felt renewed and excited about RFTW and eager to make the 2010 Run the best ever.
Thank you to everyone who was there. See the rest of you next week in Kerrville.
There is a change to the Angel Fire Reunion schedule.
The Rider’s Forum will be held on Saturday, Sept. 5 beginning at 4:30 PM and ending at 5:45 PM. The location is Angel Fire Resort in conference rooms A - C.
Monte Apodaca, RFTW member and board member of the David Westphall Veterans Foundation (Angel Fire), reports that the Foundation is assisting with a Veterans Wellness and Healing Retreat for veterans with PTSD. The 7-day retreat will be held in Angel Fire beginning October 2, 2009. It is a pilot program, the results of which will be incorporated into a feasibility study for the New Mexico Legislature to consider in building a Veterans Wellness & Healing Center in New Mexico. The Foundation is working to raise $30,000 for the feasibility study and the retreat which will be at no cost to Veterans attending.
Monte invites RFTW and Patriot Guard Riders to be in Angel Fire on October 2 to welcome the first patients and their families. Participating Veterans are required to have their family at the retreat. The family will go through the treatments also, so the family unit will understand what is happening to the veteran. A fundraiser is being held on August 16 in Albuquerque. If you can help by donating cash or raffle items, please contact Monte at 575-595-5166 or mapodaca@afgov.org.
Let me introduce myself. I’m John “Ice Scout” King, Jr. and I’m honored to have been selected by the Board of Directors to serve as the President this year.
My wife Ela and I live here in St. Michaels where I run a medical clinic and she is a rehabilitation counselor. Both of our children are Marines.
I was commissioned into the Air Force in 1967 and served in a maintenance squadron until 1972. I did not go to Vietnam.
Ela and I met Dr. Westphall at the Angel Fire Memorial in 1998. He reintroduced me to the idea of honorable service and the importance of keeping the faith. I first rode with RFTW in 1999. I didn’t ride very far, but the people I met made quite an impression. I kept coming back and going a little further each year.
In 2002, I got to DC and was chosen to help present our Wreath at Arlington. As we rode in, I could barely keep the bike upright. At the Tomb, I was overwhelmed by a sense of redemption; and I came to terms with the loss of a friend who didn’t come home. That was the healing I hope every FNG and rider finds with RFTW.
Beginning in 2004, I served as a Southern Route Road Guard for five years, and was elected to the Board of Directors in 2005 as the Treasurer. In those roles, I’ve worked with the most dedicated and faithful colleagues you could ever ask to know.
That’s what I bring to this job. Here are my thoughts about our Run:
.Its about volunteers and the Mission; the reasons why we ride and the people who make it happen.
.Its about organizing and operating as safely as we can.
.Its about respecting and honoring the communities who welcome us.
.Its about thanking those who came before us and helped build this Run.
.Its about keeping faith with each rider and helping one another get to DC.
.Its about standing up for those who cannot ride.
I especially appreciate our two Route Coordinators this year; Ray McDowell on the Southern Route and Arnie Swift on Central Route. They, and their teams, will do everything they can to lead their riders safely to Washington next May.
There are 200+ volunteer jobs to be filled on each Route. Think about how you can help make the Run better and ask your leaders for a job where you can do that.
Thank you and ride safe.
For those of you who want a print of the group photo from the Lincoln Memorial, (12 x 18, $20.00 each), contact "KZ" Ric White at 703-445-8528 or pikrz@aol.com.
Thanks to Ray Wyatt, "Ghost Rider", for posting this on the forum yesterday. As he said, "this is why we ride".
"This is not the ending that we had hoped and prayed for but the family of Navy Capt. Michael Scott Speicher now has proof of what happened 18 years ago. His remains have been identified and will be coming home.
Next year when you get tired and wonder if you should continue, remember this news. When you wonder if the personal expense is worth it, remember this news.
We ride for those who can’t.
He has been one of the ones that couldn’t ride. Now he begins his final ride home to the family he left behind when he answered the call of his country.
Welcome Home Brother and Thank You for your Service."

As much discussion has been voiced on the forum, please know that the Board of Directors in their January meeting made the decision that there will be no offical video made of the 2009 run. There were several reasons for the decision, and one was to allow the healing that takes place on the run to do so with out cameras recording it.

Run For The Wall: Financial Status as of June 30, 2008
1. The June 30, 2008 financial statements are provided for review. If you have questions, please contact John King, Jr. RFTW Board of Directors Treasurer.
2. At the September Angel Fire reunion, RFTW presented a $2,000.00 donation to the Westphall Foundation at the Angel Fire Vietnam Veterans Memorial to help support educational programs.
Of this amount, $1,800 was the proceeds from the 2004 Big Dog Motorcycle raffle. That raffle was intended to develop a scholarship fund. Unfortunately, not enough money was raised to provide any significant scholarship support and there was no desire to raffle another bike. The $1,800 was held in RFTW’s accounts. After considerable research and discussion, the current Board of Directors decided to devote this money plus an additional $200 in other RFTW funds to assist the Angel Fire Memorial. This closes out the 2004 Big Dog raffle.
3. RFTW participants are very generous supporters of schools and other charities during the Run. This year, participants provided some $42,000.00 in gifts to Rainelle School, Colorado City Middle School, Spiller Elementary and Montvale Elementary as well as for Freedom is Not Free.
These are gifts directly from the Run participants to the chosen charity. These monies are held separately from the RFTW funds and are not included in our financial statements.
4. At Kerrville, the Board of Directors decided to change the RFTW fiscal year to a July 1 - June 30 cycle to better align our accounting processes with the annual Run organizational activity.
5. Also at Kerrville, the Board of Directors adopted the following financial goals for the next two years:
A. Continue to be financially self-sufficient by generating adequate revenues through RFTW’s own work to a) operate each year’s Run at break-even or better, and b) continue to build cash reserves to a level sufficient to operate the Run for two years.
B. Fund all operations on a cash basis. Minimize credit card-based financing except where operationally expedient such as billings for merchandise shipping fees.
C. By June 30, after the Run: 1) all bills will be paid, 2) we will have adequate funds to cover routine continuing operations and c) at least half of the anticipated costs of the next year’s Run will be held in our savings.
D. Implement an annual benevolence program to provide up to $10,000 per year for selected charities whose mission and values are consistent with RFTW’s. A committee of the Board of Directors has begun organizing this annual giving program

Mark, I would like to take a moment and express my sincere appreciation for the opportunity to be able to serve on the Board of Directors of Run For The Wall, even though I was forced to abbreviate my tenure due to health issues. As you know, Ms. Anne has had to contend with polymyalgia rheumatica for several of years and I was just recently diagnosed with spinal stenosis. This last Run literally took all of what little stamina that we had left...and that was just riding in a comfortable truck! There is no way that I will ever be able to make that grueling trip across country on a bike again.
It has been an honor to serve with you and the other members of the Board. I have served on several different Boards of Directors for other 501(c)(3) organizations, but I must say that this RFTW board has been the most honorable. I am proud to have served RFTW in this capacity and wish all of you continued success in pursuit of our Mission.
Ms. Anne and I will look forward to seeing all at the annual Kerrville reunion and hope to be on the overpass near Weatherford, TX to greet the Southern Route again, as we did on our first Run in ’03.
Semper Fi, my friends.

Washington D.C. Motorcycle Maintenance & Repair Information:
In the past it has been very difficult to obtain maintenance or repair work in the DC area in a timely manner so that participants can get back on their road home. Recently contacts have been made with service departments at local dealers in hopes of receiving some help in this regard.
First, if you know you will need service on your arrival please call ahead as soon as possible to make an appointment. The full service appointment can take a long time and these places are already busy with their regular customers. If you can make do with simple fluid and filter change, let the service writer know that you are on the Run For The Wall and that you only need the reduced services. Many of the contacts below have been made and the information given by the person answering is provided.

Rancho Cucamonga information
The 2008 Run will stage on Wednesday, May 14th from Rancho Cucamonga. Street address is 7950 Day Creek Blvd, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91739. Address given is for a parking lot near the JC Penney store in the Victoria Gardens Mall. On the map on the RFTW Home Page, drill down on the motorcycle in California. The bike is inside the parking lot.
Other important addresses and plans.
The Host Hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn, is at 11481 Mission Vista Drive, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730. The hotel is about 1/2 mile north north-west of the intersections of Interstate 10 and Interstate 15.
The Central Park Community Center in Rancho Cucamonga is at 11200 Base Line Road, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91701. Location is at the north-west corner of Base Line Road and Milliken Avenue.
Tuesday, May 13th, are some activities for those of you arriving early, and not tied up in RFTW meetings all day. If you’re local, you might want to consider getting together with a few hundred of your friends before you head toward the Wall on Wednesday morning.
0930 hrs Tuesday: A Run to Riverside National Cemetery is scheduled to leave the host hotel at 0930 hrs. At the National Medal of Honor Memorial, we’ll meet with MoH recipients Col. Lewis Millett and John Baca. We will then meet at the National POW / MIA Memorial to talk with its sculptor, Lewis Lee Millett Jr. While there, we expect a flyover by four helicopters, three of which are Hueys which are Viet Nam combat veterans. One of the Hueys will land off site, and fly the two MoH recipients to French Valley Airport in Murietta, California.
1100-1300 hrs Tuesday: Wings and Rotors Air Museum, home of the four helicopters, will host a media day at French Valley as a kickoff for their mission to fly to the Wall and return. They will fly over our Wednesday staging in Rancho Cucamonga, and intercept RFTW at several locations across the country.
1630 hrs Tuesday: Blessing of the Bikes in the west parking lot at Central Park.
1730 - 1930 hrs Tuesday: A hosted dinner for registered participants in the Community Center at Central Park. There will be a program starting at 1815 (6:15pm). The dinner is buffet style, so come any time. Cost for non-registered folks will be $10.00. If you’re going on the Run, but hadn’t registered at the host hotel on Monday or Tuesday before the dinner, we appreciate your contribution to help offset the expenses.
For many of you, this will be the only time you have to relax and socialize with riders of both Central and Southern Routes. Mil Thornton, last year’s California Coordinator, can be thanked for coming up with the Tuesday dinner concept. It should be a great day for those of you arriving in Rancho Cucamonga early, or for those local riders who have historically waited until Wednesday morning to join the Run. Now you can join us for a great dinner Tuesday night, and still sleep in your own beds the night before the run. ’See you all in Rancho Cucamonga this year!

RFTW XX POW, KIA, MIA Missing Man Table and Book of Remembrance
On Friday, May 23 a Missing Man Table will be set up in the lobby of the Holiday Inn, at Ballston, in DC. The exact location in the lobby has yet to be determined. A “RFTW XX Book of Remembrance” will be placed on the table for everyone to sign or to place a hand written note or object of expression. The book will be dedicated to all POW’s, MIA’s and KIA’s from all wars, and is a memento from RFTW XX. It is also a continuation of the Missing Man Formation, which began in Ontario.
Cowboy and Hammer will leave the “Book of Remembrance” at the Vietnam Wall on Sunday, May 25, or at another designated time.
Both Southern and Central Route riders are encouraged to participate in the signing of the “RFTW XX Book of Remembrance”. The book will be available for signing on Friday, May 23 from 1700 to 2100 hours, on Saturday, May 24 from 0700 to 1100 hrs, and then from 1300 to 1700 hrs. On Sunday, May 25 for four hours from 0700 to 1100 hrs. Objects that can be placed in the book are: hand written notes of expression, patches, photos, coins and pins.
Participants from both routes are invited to serve “duty” at the table in DC for approximately one-hour intervals. Road Guards and others from both routes are invited to volunteer as Table Guards, and stand table duty also for approximately one-hour intervals. A signature page will contain all the participants and Table Guard signatures that participated at the table. In addition, all participants will receive a Missing Man pin or patch.
All volunteers should contact “Dutch” Stevens, SR Road Guard and ICO, to have your name placed on the duty roster for the Missing Man Table in DC. He will assign your one-hour time slot.
With respect for the Missing Man Formation on the run, please contact Dutch only in Ontario, CA or Washington, DC. This will give FNG’s and other volunteers from both routes equal opportunity to sign the duty roster. Quiet respect and honor will be expected at the table by removing your caps. Please, no alcohol at the table.

Jim,
One of the long time RFTW supporters in Arizona is about to undergo treatment for a very aggressive cancer. Dick Darnell is an in-country Vietnam veteran who for a number of years provided food for the RFTW stop in Arizona and funded it largely out of his own not-very-deep pockets. It was Dick’s traveling kitchen which, when it wasn’t feeding hungry RFTW participants, made the rounds of the Phoenix area providing meals for those who were likely not to get one any other way. Dick has a heart of gold and is a person who would literally give you the shirt off of his back if you were in need of one.
I would like to get the word out to anyone who would like to attend this recognition and support gathering, and also to see if RFTW or any participants who might remember Dick and whose belly was filled by his kitchen, might be able to help out with costs for the event.
It has been quite a while since I was involved with RFTW. I am hoping you still have contacts and can forward this to them.
Thanks in advance for whatever you can do,
Terry
The party for Dick is set. Now we need your help. Please e-mail all your
list and disseminate the details of our plans. Come to express your support for Dick while he takes on the Chemotherapy and the Radiation therapy at the same time. It will be hard and very testing of
the strength left in him. Dick is our brother, our friend, and a cancer victim who needs our help and our support. Many thanks for your help and support. Please mark your Calendars, and Day Timers.
DATE: 2-16-08
DAY: Saturday
TIME: 1600 to 2200 For our civilians that are 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Pop in Pop out, at your leisure..........
WHERE: Basement of the VA Ambulatory Care Center, details on what door to enter will be sent out as soon, as VA Police, give us the details.
I’m thinking it will be the southwest door or main entrance. Because you must take elevator to basement level.
3RD Street and E. Indian School Rd. Phoenix, AZ.
POT-Luck, if you can afford to bring a dish and place it for all please do. If you can’t God Bless you and come anyway, its about Dick for Dick, and you’ll be blessed for it.
I would like to ask the Chapter 432, to donate soda and water or anyone wanting to take charge of this. Let me know. Any ideas to make it better step up and be counted. It would really be appreciated.
Thank you.

Recon Don asked me to post the following. It is good information
BROTHER SON FATHER What do you believe in? Is it joss, luck, fate or karma? Whatever you choose to call it, it was at work Thursday, December 13, 2003, in the early morning. Danny Hawkins and Jason Drew Morrill were taken in the pre-dawn hours, both long before those that loved them would have perceived logical. Those of us who were part of their family, either by blood or choice are missing two very special people. Our Brother Danny, a favorite at Tuscaloosa VAMC, was probably my greatest physical challenge. When eight of his brothers and I undertook to put this 180 lbs. quadriplegic on a motorcycle from his wheelchair. At the same time, Danny was the most satisfying emotional experience, witnessed by the unbridled glee from him once on the bike. For all who choose to participate at these VAMC stops, I urge you to find your own Danny Hawkins. I have found others, take the time to listen and hear their stories. One in Battle Mountain, Nevada, that gives a clear running account of the attack on Hick ham Field (Pearl Harbor) and shows us his prized 48 star flag. Clarksburg, West Virginia, another vet tells us his opinion of General George Patton; as he happened to be his personal driver. Each of you make the effort to find your won Danny! If you are not along for veterans like these, maybe you should examine your motives. Semper fiRecon
Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2008 by Straightarrow I’ll be riding again this year with the Central Route but I want to add something to the trip. I’m planning a very exciting side trip. On Saturday morning the 24th, I’m going to lead a group down to Quantico to the National Museum of the Marine Corps. This place is not only huge but extremely interesting with displays that are amazing - ie - ’Nam display is in a "room" that is 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the building and the Korean War display is in a "room" 10 degrees colder. Just the highlites. And, when I say huge, I’m not kidding. When I asked how many we could bring without disrupting their day to day, they asked if we could keep it at no more than 2500 AT ONE TIME.
I will leave Arlington (Holiday Inn - Balston) at 0700 (its a 45 to 60 minute run) - they’ve offered to possibly open early for us (0900 is normal ) . Its not necessary for any in the group to ride down with me if they prefer to ride alone, just that I have the numbers in advance. And they will have parking and extra guides put aside for us. Interested parties please just send an email to me ( Doug@Lyvere.com ) with the primary name (road name is fine) and a head count. I will start compiling the list. If you’re "head count" is one, I will assume one bike. Otherwise, please qualify. BTW, this is not restricted to RFTW - everyone is welcome, bikes, cages, friends, family, whomever. We will be back at the Lincoln Memorial by 1:00 P.M. for the group photo, and walk to the Wall.
