All...just an update to this....I now have at least halfdozen Marines coming with me from my command to RC! That said some won't be goin all the way but this will be good exposure for them. A group from our command is planning on riding from RC to the first evenin stop in TX, and then returning to CA. It should be a great exposure for them to RFTW. I've heard rumors that our CO might ask our Public Affairs folks to be in RC to report on the ride...does anyone know if I need to coordinate this type of publicity or will that be ok?

Nikefash First of all wecome home and thank your for your service. Is there a possiblity that there could be something posted in your AF news letters and through your Green knights groups. We have a large AF base here in Abilene and it getting short of time to get the word to them about this information. I'am sure If enough troops across the country knew that this was available we would possibly have enough too add more platoons and there could be nothing betterin that. Hey you guy's and the one's before are who we are riddin for!

Just thought of something else. If Shortciruit in looking in maybe someone could send her some info. on the leave situations so she could get it out to the guy's at Fort Bliss and see how their comand feels about supporting the run and their troops.

SIXSHOOTER............We had a LANG pio ride from Monroe LA to DC last 2 years and reported back to her command on the ride. She didn't need any permission, I would say it's like you or me or any other rider. See, write, report.............enjoy.
Thank you for your work.
Toothless........I will call her and see if she has the word. I believe her husband may, if not will have her contact SIXSHOOTER.

Thanks Cowboy. Just seems to me that this would be a great way to get out the new RFTA program and get the new generation ready to take over from the old heads down the line. |

E-mail me the information as Carol & I both live near a couple of bases. We were also planning to put some information together to pass out in San Diego the 23, at the Welcome Home Viet Nam Veterans day event in Whittier. We could also add it to the press packets we are putting together. angelluvers@att.net |

Just to clarify a little...active duty military shouldn't require any special permission to participate in RFTW as long as they are adhering to the leave and liberty policies of their commands. However, if a commander wants to authorize his personnel to go on the ride without the member taking leave that would require coordination with that local commander and that decision would reside with individual commanders. I hope that clarifies any misunderstandings.

SixShooter,
My nephew I wrote about, Gunny Carl Lopez is at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA, not 29 Palms. He will be a FNG this year. He will not retire until September from what I hear now. He is putting in for leave so that he can meet me at Gallup and we ride in from there. We're going home to see my parents and spend acouple of days with them since he hasn't been home since he returned last month from Afganistan.
Could you please get in touch with him and inform him of this possibility. I would truly appreciate your help.

LOBO....do you know what unit he is with or an email address for him. I'll try and look him up tomorrow but that's a common name and might be hard to find him...if I locate him though I will certainly make sure he knows about his options.

For military insurance purposes, an active duty member must be accounted for in a couple of categories--present and accounted for duty, on temporary duty(TDY), or on authorized leave(vacation). Commanders can and often do allow members to participate in a permissive TDY status for recognized activities such as sports tournaments, in which the member does not have to take vacation time. In extreme cases, a member who has an accident, or dies in an unrelated military activity, may loose their insurance coverage for medical expenses and in the event of a death, the life insurance annuity may not be passed on to the beneficiary. All of the conditions surrounding the accident/death are reviewed by a military tribunal in order to determine if the member was acting in the best interest of the military. It's a touchy situation, particularliy for a commander to make that call on permissive TDY. It may be different for each service and I am speaking from a former Air Force squadron commander's perspective. |

The RFTW easily qualifies for Permissive TDY especially if the individual agrees to do some recruiting along the way. Another plus would be to do Hometown News releases at the dury station and the individuals HOR (home of record). If the orders are properly written, the soldier could qualify for travel pay and per diem. However, the orders will most likely be written so the travel is at no expense to the government.

Sixshooter,
On Sunday it was my honor to Welcome Home LCPL Daniel Riley with the Patriot Guard Riders. Daniel enlisted in the Marines in 2008 as a Canadian citizen. In 2009 he became a US citizen while in Iraq. Dec. 16, 2010 his vehicle was hit by a IED and he lost both legs and part of this left hand. He has come home for two weeks then returns to rehab in San Diego. His younger brother leaves soon for the Marines....he has never heard of the Run For The Wall. LCPL Riley's blog and info is: http://danielcwriley.blogspot.com See his incredible pics there of his recovery. He is also on FB. I thought he might like connecting with you and learning about the Ride.
Sixshooter, thanks for what you are doing....
