Most of us by now are suffering from a bad case of PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome) and probably trying to get past that by planning what to bring, where to put it and what things need to be done to the bike before the ride out to RC (or where ever you plan to meet up with the RFTW family)

What kind of stuff did you pack last year that you absolutely did NOT use? (Stuff that you thought was a good idea but in retrospect, just took up valuable space.)

Gallupe,   This is a great topic, Since I am a FNG, I have started making a list of STUFF,  that I MIGHT need.  I have always over packed, even in the boonies.  I have a trike now and last summer I STILL oberpacked.  I do look foreward to some of the brothers experiences that will help me and other FMG's

Fireball, welcome to RFTW and welcome home.  You're in for an experience of a life time.

Last year, I planned things out.  Was cold right up to the day of departure so I threw in a few sweat shirts that I "may need".  Took up too much room. Thankfully there is a Fedex store right down the road from the host hotels in RC (within walking distance actually) -- those unplanned items went into a box, along with a few gifts I picked up for my better half......  freed up some space.

This year I'm losing the camping gear and will be staying in hotels. That should also reduce the weight.....

One of the things I learned after the first RFTW was that I only bring dark clothing.  Dark socks ,shirts  etc ..Then I only have to put the laundry in the machine and not sort it  I bring powdered soap and fabric softner with me and have tons of quraters..I do laundry twice on the 17 day round trip.7 pair of Socks 7 underwear etc  that I wash in Rancho Cucamonga and then again in Corydon ,Indiana

4 Runs..4 sets of "didn't need to bring those"
Absolute MUSTS; dry socks everyday, clean scivvies everyday; long sleeve Tees only(or Henleys) cold mornings/hot afternoons-push em up, scorching days keep em down, saves getting fried. Rain gear(easy on-easy off), chapstick, 'fingerless' and 'fingered' Gloves, sunburn lotion, pack 5 pair of rolled Levi's, leather jacket-leather chaps (for those 'premonition' days..)dark glasses&clear glasses, face mask/bandanna (cold days or rain or sleet)Bathroom kit, tool kit and flat-fixr; cash-lots of 1's and 5's and keep a sharp eye out for Marty!! Very important-Must stay out of Chrome's way in the Gas lines....

"5 pairs of rolled Levi's" - You have to be kidding me.....  Only need 2 pair - Wear one, pack one.  Plenty of laundry chances along the way.  Need more?  Buy em on the run.  Socks = 2 days, skivies = wear 1 day and toss away (buy a new supply when you get back).  Just a couple long sleeve T's = you'll most likely be buying a few new shirts along the way.

Tools are heavy- and everybody has too many already.  One of those all in one kits like you get for Father's day should be enough.  Or the old standard, a hammer, vicegrips, duct tape, and WD-40.

By cutting back on some junk, you can bring a couple luxuries.  I brought a small folding metal/canvas chair just for the long wait in the Pentagon parking lot.  I think it was worth the hassle.  The other was the netbook laptop.  Go on-line at any Starbucks and get a weather report or other news, and email from home of course.

A water bottle with a straw and a way to access it with your left hand will be very helpful after the first hour of any riding leg (usually the legs are 2 hours in the saddle) when it's hot.

Packing is a big issue.  We're just getting warmed up here...  (Yeah, that "packing" is an issue, too.)
Freedom. It seems to frighten a lot of people, but I am sold on it.

RedCatcher- notice I didn't pack any laundry soap?     Also didn't spend no time sitting round any washing machine....those things made it onto my "Didn't really need these" list early on!

Never packed any laundry soap, but guess I could with all the room without the levi's.  Might make my T-bag smell a little fresher.LOL  My fng year in 2004 I was packed to the brim with some of everything I didn't "need" (based on the published list).  The past few years I've had room to spare in the ol' T-bag.  I generally buy 2-3 new event shirts along the way for the trip back (save some room for new purchases).

If you're riding with a buddy, best to split-up the tools you think you might need (lighten the load). With the Chase Vehicles you probably won't be needing any tools, but have the basics for the ride back.  I also "pack" for the ride home but keep it stashed on RFTW.

Just a couple suggestions.

a small spray bottle of wd 40--stand on a roll of duck tape n flatten it out as best as possible ,takes less space. spare headlite bulb , infalate a tire , small pac of wet wipes , small led flash lite, n i found pipes cleaners r great for all kinds of uses n take lil space. to each his own n u have to pic n choose what fits u n what u have room for. small is best n what u can replace easily at any gas station or convienance store..razors , tooth paste n brush--combo body wash n shampoo , small sized dedorant-etc.

Ray.........I have to agree........he thinks he is human.  I got him started on this new thing of having a slice of american cheese as his midnight snack.  I swear he can hear it being opened from a half mile away.  If I don't give it to him on his schedule he will sit in my lap and paw at me until I get up.

When Wilson gets back from his holiday visit in California I will be sending him your way.  I'll stop by on the Run to make sure he is behaving himself.

Dry socks and underwear are a must...... In order to save space on skivvies, I bought a pair (why are men's undershorts always a pair when you wear one?) of LD Comfort shorts. https://ldcomfort.com/productdescription.htm
They are like bicycle shorts... no sore butt from seams, and they handle the heat real well. Best part is you can wash them in the shower every nite with the motel's shampoo, wring 'em out, roll 'em a few times in a dry towell, then hang them up for the night. They will be dry in the AM. Just need to pack a couple of pairs of skivvies to sleep in, if you are so inclined, and some to run around DC in.

Big smile Packing for the ride is not “Rocket Science”! Make a list of what you think you will need, (The RFTW list is a good place to start)!

1. Try to pack your bike! Take out the stuff that will not fit.
2. Repack your bike! Take out the stuff that you think you won’t need!
3. Unpack your bike and look at the stuff you have left, then look at the stuff you took out.
4. Make trades! Repack your bike, and go back to #1!
Your going on a long ride, fashion does not count here! Get rid of the fancy item’s and go to Good Will and buy cheap tee’s and Jean’s. When the tee’s get dirty use them to wipe your bike down, then throw them away! Find another Good Will and start again! So easy it's embarrassing!Beer

Good info. Building on Casper, where to put stuff is also worth some thought.   The right saddle bag is the one you want tools or anything you may need if you have to pull off the road --- the non-traffic side.......................
