I admit to being a FNG so this might be something everybody but me knows already. Does anybody worry about security of the motorcycles overnight? Has there been problems with bikes being stolen in parking lots while traveling? Does anybody have any suggestions for a GOOD security system to put on the bike before we leave?

HarleyRG,

I haven't heard of anyone experiencing any issues with bikes being stolen or other wise "messed with" and I certainly haven't experienced any issues.  My previous experience has been to just lock my forks and saddlebags/trunk and all is well.

Thank you Bald Eagle. I feel a little better about that. I would like to install a security system if I can find one that works and doesn't cost a thousand dollars.

Almost all the time your bike is just one of several hundred, and people are always around.  In 23 years I'm sure there are stories-- like last year when a bike went missing and it turned out to be some kind of re-po.

Your bike will be unattended by you at hotels, memorials, Harley dealerships, a school or two- not good places for thieves to operate with any ease.  Not like you're in a sleazy bar in a bad part of town...

I would not worry too much about this issue, I only lock my bags at night and when we stop lost of times things are left on the bike and never bothered.  I leave a camera on my about 70% of the time and have never had any problems.  At hotel, you will be parked with others so just lock the forks, I dont even do that.  Just make sure if you put on a new alarm you get it all worked out before the run and I am sure you don't want to come out to your bike alarm going off for no reason and find sleepy bikers standing around waitng to see who's alarm keeps going off, just saying!

HarleyRG,

If you are looking for the an alarm system, the HD factory one is $263.96 from Surdyke HD.  www.surdyke.com  It appears to be a very simple install.  I've had the HD alarm on my past 3 and both our current bikes and never had an issue.

Like Raven said, it would be a good idea to get it (and any new "accessories") installed in advance of the Run and get a few miles on it to ensure it is working properly.

You could probably leave the keys in it, and it would NOT be messed with.  I can only speak to the Central Route, as I am sure Southern is the same way, but most of the towns we overnight in are small, and they are glad we are there... and would not dream of messing with anyone's motorcycle.  In a nutshell, total non-issue.

thanks for the input. I worry more about the return trip where it may be the only bike on the lot and was looking for something that would probably alert me and maybe give GPS coordinates if the bike is moved so a pretty high end security device. I hadn't looked at the HD device though and I will do that. Thanks. Any and all input is greatly appreciated as experience speaks volumes.

Wife and I traveled from Denver to Bozeman to Spokane and returned to Denver Last year, and had no one mess with either bike.  Lojack and HD security on Softail, and HD security on Trike.  Always parked in Motel parking lots.  Some motels will let you park under front awning (in case of rain or hail)

I ususally take a really roundabout road home to California and I'm by myself most of the time.  I've have no problems what so ever.  I use the H-D factory system, use a front disk lock, and lock my bags at night.

I do know you can get LoJack for motorcycles too but have no idea what that cost is.

As noted above, usually not an issue on the run.

But the return trip is different.

FWIW, the only issue I've ever had in many years of riding around this country solo is little kids wanting to sit on my bike.  So, I just put a cover over it and that seems to have solved that problem.

Hope that helps!

We have gone to a few motorcycle rallys and a few dark hotel parking lots.  We have not had a problem yet.  My boyfriend has an HD and it comes with that keyfob kill switch and he locks his ignition and forks.  I have a Yamaha so I park mine (even thought I think mine is prettier Tongue) angled behind him.  I figure they will go after the HD over mine (I know what a great girlfriend I am to sacrafice my bike).  I then lock my ignition and I have a pad lock that goes on my front forks.  We empty his bags and take our tool bags to our room with us.  We then resnap this bags (thieves are usually lazy).  We also try and park as close to the room as possible and some hotels will even allow you to park right in front of their entrance but talk to them 1st.

If you put the H-D alarm on your bike, there is also a companion pager that works up to 1/2 mile away. I've never had a problem with anyone messing with the bike but the pager did go off once when I was parked in front of a vehicle wanting out of a driveway and some friendlies were assisting by moving my bike out of his way. It's a good idea not to lock the fork when we pull in to a stop for lunch or dinner for that reason.

Hey, Fallout, looks from here like you and your guy are sitting there taking turns posting on the forum. Look forward to seeing you at the BBQ in a couple of weeks.

We travel a bit on the bikes and usually it is just us (2 bikes) and we do not stay in the fancy hotel.  We park near the room if possible and lock the bags.  Never had a problem yet.  Don't have  HD but have nice bikes just the same.
If an alarm will make you sleep better do it, if you feel comfortable it will be a better trip for you both!

I really appreciate all the senior advice. I have traveled all around by myself on my HD and haven't had any problems either. I just think its time for a good alarm system but it sounds like our motors are safe at least for the ride to DC for sure.

That is too funny!  I didnt even know he was on the forum right now (we dont live together).  I will have to go see what he is up too.  Anything good?  LOL  See you in a couple of weeks.  Will I get to meet your lovely wife this time or are you riding solo?

Oh and good comment about not locking the forks at short stops.  We only do the iginition locks during the day.  We dont bother with any of the other stuff until we are in for the night.

Fallout, my wife doesn't ride so if she wants to come we will have to cage it. I might bring the hot rod; haven't decided.
