    Posted: Mar-20-2012 at 8:27am
After our practice/training ride on last Sunday, I thought about purchasing a new helmet, preferably one with headphones and a mic built in it. I would like to add a CB radio to the bike too so I could listen to the chatter (I have no intentions of talking as a FNG on the run). I would like some suggestions about which helmet and which radio. Bluetooth or wired? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is it May yet?

I have heard good things out of the Scala models as well as
the Chatterbox items. I ride a HD with CB installed and I
agree with you, I am planning on listening in to road comms
also for info sake.

I have the newest Scala version and LOVE it. My wife rides her own HD Trike and we are able to talk up to a mile away. It does not have CB in it though. We have the HD CB on her trike which is what we will be riding this year because she does not feel comfortable driving in formation and has openly stated she can not get enough stuff in my Road Glide so we compromised and are taking her bike.

For CB radio, I would recommend a J&M system.  You get the radio for your left handlebar complete with all hardware and an antenna.  Install time for an amateur like me was about 3 hours.  As to your helmet, J&M offers a selection of helmet speakers and microphones for both open faced helmets and full helmets.  The choice of helmet is yours to make.  There are so many brands out there and most of them are quality products.  I would recommend you go down to a motorycle supply store and try on the different makes because some fit and are more comfortable than others.  After you buy your helmet, J&M headsets can be installed by you in as little as an hour.

I concur with Velocityguy about the J&M headsets and microphones... great products.  AS for helmets, I'd advise you to stay away from modular designs... you know, the ones with the flip-up chin bar. like the Shoei Multi-Tec.  They tend to be very difficult to install the headset/microphone in and achieve a result you'll be satisfied with.  Better to stick with an open face with a boom mike or full face with the fixed mike installation.

Doc Grizzly
The New J&M radio system is very good and the antenna is matched. As far as a helmet get the one that fits the best don't worry about the brand.
I use J&M wired headsets that way I do not have to worry about charging the battery at night.
If you need help instaling the CB PM me. We meet each month at the lunchen in Loveland.

DocGrizzly,

When I had my Road King I bought a J&M Intergratr IV Portable (Model number JMSR4020) Motorcycle Audio system to use and used it exactly once. It allows you to plug multiple items into it including rider and passenger helmet, music source, even cell phone (not recommended). I used it with a portable CB radio and it actually worked but the portable CB had limitations. I was planning on running it on EBAY but would love for a RFTW family member to get it.

Let me know if you are interested.

For helmets check out newenough.com before you buy. Depending on model and availability they may save you some money. But if you order online remember to go somewhere and try the particular model on for size, seems they all have a different idea how to fit one.

Just got the new Shoei Neotec helmet and tried it out this morning for the first time. As a modular helmet I expected it to be pretty noisy, but it is the quietest helmet I've ever worn. I love the built-in retractable sun visor. The sun was directly in my face when I hit the freeway this morning and I could see very well. I've been wearing Arai helmets for years because I like the fit for me; never found a Shoei helmet that was comfortable for me, but this one is very comfortable. Tends to fog up, though. It has the pin-lock anti-fog system, but I haven't tried it yet. Pretty good ventilation compared to my previous helmets, too. Don't know how well it would accomodate headsets and microphone, cause I don't have any of those things. Big down-side is the price - almost $600. I looked at and tried about a zillion helmets, though, and couldn't find a less expensive on I liked as much.

Take it from the guy who has tried multiple set ups.  Buy the J&M.  Look at Clays radio shop or Sierra MC online for the best prices.  Also dont go cheap on the headset either.  The three bikes in my garage.  (wife, kid, and mine) all have the J&M set up and thats what I will stay with.  I use the corded system and that way I can ride all day without worrying about battery life on a headset.  Just my .02 worth.  Welcome Home!!

Hey Doc to listen to the chatter on the Run you'll need a cb.  I did a lot of research and chose the J&M 2003.  I got two complete sets from a member of one of the riding clubs I belong to.   I have an extra J&M2003 cb, headset and antennae/mount and all the cabling.  Let me know if you're interested.

I also have a size L HJC FS-10 full face helmet with internal sun visor that I wore twice before getting my Nolan modular.  The system is pretty easy to install on the bike and the headset is a piece of cake.  Give me shout if interested. 303-359-8862
