Gov Christie (NJ) opened a can of worms when he ordered flags flown at half-staff for Whitney Houston. This is an honor reserved for persons who have contributed greatly to our country's military safety, and for Presidents, Senators--people who ensured our continued greatness as a nation. It diminishes the value of our real heroes. If we start flying the flag at half-staff for celebrities, what does that say about what we think of our men and women who serve our country and risk their lives in time of war? My two cents worth here http://www.azinews.com/2012/02/17/judys-blog-flags-lowered-for-celebrities/

If I may put my two cents in I would like to say, this Governor has priorities completely wrong. I will agree, Whitney was an extraordinary singer and actress but thats where it ends. She done nothing to make this a better country. This is an example of Government getting involved where they have no business! What next? A memorial to Jane Fonda. I'm sure someone might think it the right thing to do....Shame on you Governor Christie!

Like you Velco, I also believe this honor is reserved for those who have earned it and not for celebrities. While I do like Gov. Christie, I do not agree with him on this issue. My flag flew high and proud.

Okay, I can afford two cents. I think we spend way too much time and energy idolizing and even worshipping our celebrities. I think they bring us a little relief from our ordinary lives with glimpses into their magical ones filled with riches and privilege and adulation. We all dream at one time or another of being like them, of achieving fame and fortune like them.
Most of them, however, seem pretty messed up to me. It's really no wonder, either, given the lack of privacy, the constant invasion by the paparazzi, the constant a$$ kissing by their hordes of sycophant attendants, the easy availability of drugs and alcohol. They begin to believe all the hype. They think they really are special and different. But they all have the same weaknesses and insecurities we all have, only with all the rest of it they never learn to cope with them, so they end up abusing the drugs and alcohol. They can't form real relationships so they bounce from marriage to marriage.
Our problem is we cannot seem to separate in our minds the person from the talent. We are unable to appreciate their contributions to the arts while recognizing that, as people, they are really bad role models. Doesn't matter whether it's Whitney or MJ or Elvis, it's okay to be sad they are gone and to miss the contributions they will not get to make, but it is totally inappropriate to make heroes out of these societal misfits, and absolutely wrong to honor them by lowering the flag for them.
One man's opinion, for whatever it is worth.

I agree with all previous postings. And yes, she WAS an extraordinary talent. But the focus for centuries has been to honor those who should be honored; and we all know what that means Period!
I know its crass, but if they want to honor her with a lighter under a spoon . . . . . . . . Hey I know its BAD!; but we seem to way to forgiving of our so-called heroes. Give me a Will Rogers, John Wayne, and their like any day. I guess that is about 4 cents worth. Skeater |

We can mourn the passing of a tremendous talet without endorsing the life she led. Honors are for those who have earned them.

He could have just lowered the NJ flag and that would have been fine, since she was from there. I know the gov did what he thought was right, but I think he was wrong along with about 80% of the people, from what I have been reading...
