As a FNG I'm looking forward of going ATW. I live in Avondale Az, which my house is 6 miles from the host hotel. If anyone would like to throw their sleeping bag down on my living room floor, my wife and I would welcome you. Probably have enough room for 3-4 people. Will be parking our bikes in the garage. Let me know. I guess if you wanted to pitch a tent in my  back yard, just like when we were kids, would be ok.

That is a nice offer Big Al, I am sure you might get some takers.  Famiy spirit already and not even gone on the ride yet, that is great.

Sidewalk, just got the OK from the Missus.  We will not be camping this year but will be on the run from Monroe to Chatanooga.  Feel free to look us up for shower use.  I dont know the hotels we are at in each town but if ya need to scrape the road stench off and want some decent conversation before hitting the tent....you will just have to wait turns and morning showers are MINE!
But friendship is precious, not only in the shade, but in the sunshine of life, and thanks to a benevolent arrangement the greater part of life is sunshine.

Great news, Tommy!

We've got the showers covered for the stretch we're running with you. Just as well, I don't think anyone I know wants to share that morning shower with you...

Gotcha, Big Al...and son! In Phoenix we will be setting up a Night Defensive Position right at the host hotel. Feel free to join us for the evening there, or grab some folks to take home for the night. You can decide all that on the fly!

Sidewalk, Big Al and others,
I normally run off to visit family after the run.  This year I need to head back to Arizona.  Are any of you running back west as a group?

Yes I/we are, and you would be welcome to join us!  We will be winding through the middle of the country, and I can talk to you off the forum about our specific plans which include a day of service in one of the tornado damaged towns.

At this point we are about 6 people, but I'm sure we'll be fine if a few more want to join.  We mostly camp, but......how can I put this, we trust God to find us a place to sleep each night.  He is both very creative and faithful, some of the past adventures I wouldn't trade for anything!

I love adventure, but I know some aren't that flexible... anyway there is always a motel somewhere nearby.  If it's pouring rain, we're finding that motel!

I will be visiting relatives on the way back, but my son, Michael needs to get back to work. Maybe he'll ride with you.

The Southern Route camping plan is essentially all worked out.  Expecting 20 - 25 campers, we have places to set tents- some places we may not need to but we are good to go.  There will be showers available at all the stops but I strongly advise all of the campers to have a "shower kit" available because in some of the places we will need to take a short ride to the shower.

Shower kit includes a towel, flip-flops (available from most any politician) soap, (shampoo for those with hair,) shave kit, fresh undies, and your favorite foo-foo, whatever.

With great appreciation to the State coordinators, we have kept the costs to an absolute minimum.  Odessa is about $5 per person (Midessa Oil Patch RV) and you just pay at their office when you pull up and tell them your are RFTW.  Basically the same at the Wytheville KOA which should be about $7.  All the rest are no cost for setting up your tent.  The showers will be discussed off the forum, but don't worry about it.

The nights we are dealing with are through day nine, Salem/ Roanoke.  Once we arrive in Arlington you will be on your own to select whether you want to stay at Burke Lake, Lake Fairfax, or on the grounds at the Arlington Assembly of God church.  If you stay at the church, a bus is being provided to take people down to the Wall and Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.  There will be more information on that.  Just so the new people know, we can park our bikes on the grass down there with the thousands of other bikers who are in town for Memorial Day and Rolling Thunder.  Caution!  Be sure to have a pad along to put under your side-stand.  Motorcycle dominoes is only fun to watch when it ain't your bike, if you get my drift.

OK, maybe this is old tapes from service days, but since this is a very public forum I am not going to give details here of our specific plans and set-ups.  However, if you are with us for the camping plan and want to know more, just shoot me an email with the secret code and I will send back the detailed plan.

Or.... you could just trust me...?

Sidewalk the camping guy.

Sidewalk: Just to let you know, I will be camping this year ATW. I was an FNG last year, this year my daughter will be riding with me as her FNG year. We will have a sidecar and a trailer. Let me know whatever you think I need as information on the camping plan. Last year I had no plan and just went with the flow, all worked out fine. My e-mail hd88mc1@yahoo.com . Thanks for all your work on this.

Tom "Sidewalk" thank you so much for setting all this up for us.  I trust you and will just go with the flow for my leg of the run.  Love the shower bag idea and will pull mine out of my backpacking stuff.

See you soon my friend.

Sidewalk,
Cannot thank you enough for putting this all together.  I have added a sidecar so I should not have to look like the Beverly Hillbillies this go around.  Also nice not to have to worry about where I put my kickstand:)  I am looking forward to the ride back also.  Do we need to back tool belts or anything of that nature?

If you bring a tool belt they might put you to work permanently!

I haven't put anything together yet, I want to wait until we get close enough that we can have a more defined mission.  Also, I want it to be loose enough that we can change plan on the fly- who knows what will be going on when we start our westward roll?

We'll be like those old spaghetti westerns where the guys with the white hats roll into town and solve the problems, whup the bad guys, and get the girl.... oops, don't get too carried away, Sidewalk!
