I'm a FNG and will be camping.  What kind of overnight temps can I expect from Odessa to Arlington?  Trying to determine which sleeping bag I should bring.

Newbie- In RC we'll camp at Prado Park, about 15 minutes from the host hotel.  I believe there will be a group site arranged, as some of the riders from across the land will already be in town and using it for a couple days.  Like you, I'll be riding up from San Diego on Tuesday and will be there just one night.  Send me an email if you would like to coordinate riding up to RC in our little "Run to the Run."

We need a name for that group too I suppose- like The San Diego Conquistadors or some such, with patches, T-shirts, wait- how about capes??

tlsplawn-  I got a very light sleeping bag at Target, (Eddie Bauer) it packs up small and is plenty warm enough.  I also bring a little fleece blanket which also rolls up small- but is probably unnecessary.  I always have a sweatshirt that I can put on at night if it goes below cool to cold.  It's sort of the same "layering" principle as when riding, peel it off or put it back on as necessary.

For a pillow, I made a little "envelope" of quilted material just big enough to slide a folded sweatshirt inside.  Works good, but if I need to put the sweatshirt on at night to keep warm I'll have to figure something else out.  I suppose I could bring two sweatshirts?  Oh- that's right, I have the little blanket.  Never mind...

Is there a shower at Prado?  I looked at the website but it does not say.  Since I dont know what time the FNG meeting is I am not sure what time you plan to leave San Diego.  I live in Escondido and there will be two of us my boyfriend and I on two bikes.

I was hoping to use some of my backpacking supplies for camping.  I got a really small pillow that packs down to nothing at REI that I used when I hiked Mt. Whitney a couple of years ago.  i was going to bring that and my backpacking tent.

I am so excited.  I am going on a ride in San Marcos with Harley (I dont ride a Harley but he does LOL).  We usually do our own ride but I think I am going to insist that we ride with the guided pack to practice riding in a bigger group.  Sidewalk let me know if you were going to go we could meet.  Its at the Biggs Harley Davidson in San Marcos.  Its a poker run benifiting the BFC downed riders fund.

First- yes there is a shower at Prado Park.  Quite nice as I recall, didn't end up there last year as it was raining so we got a hotel room at the host hotel.  Five rain-soaked guys and a king bed.  Yeah, there's a story...

There is a contingent of East Coasties who stay in our area for a few days before the Run.  My understanding is that there is a breakfast at the VFW in Poway Tuesday morning, and the group rides up from there.  I plan to join that if I can, and I'm sure you will be welcome as well.  It is a few miles south and some backtracking- but in the larger scheme it is pretty close.  I will let you know as I learn more about it.

It would give you a day to practice for the real thing the following day!

If Anyone is plannig to stay at the park out side RC where Mudbug and Badger are staying. There is a small cafe just up the road from there on the way in to RC and those two will be glald to so yo the way. Great old time breakfasts at reasonabe prices. It's located on the right at the small airport as you head in toward RC.Had some good meals with Mudbug, Badger and Fatdaddy last year. They are open early and service is great! Not camping this year as some muscles and bones arn't willing so far this year.

If we want to reserve a spot for the 15th who do we talk to?  Do we make the reservations with the Park directly?

We will have a spot at Prado Park for RFTW, and I don't believe you need any special registration for that.  It will be a group site where we all set tents and arm wrestle for the best sites with a view... oh that's right, the view is all the same.  Dark.

We'll get together over at the host hotel and make a group run out to set our tents in the afternoon, then come back for the evening activities in the hotel parking lot.  That way when we go back to the campground we'll already be set up.  My illegals will guard the site for us, so be sure to leave a lot of cameras, wallets, laptops, Rolexes there so they will have something to guard.

Geeze, lighten up.  Those are Toofless's illegals anyway!

In other news, big Kudos to Cherryboy who has secured a great camping spot for us in Chattanooga.  He talked to the nice folks at the Motel 6 who not only have some nice ground for us to use for tents, but are offering rooms to any who are with RFTW for $35.86.  That's the total with tax!  In addition to that, we will have two rooms anyway for campers to use for showers right there.

Cherryboy reports that the Motel 6 staff people are big supporters of the RFTW mission, and will welcome any of us with that rate, camper or no.

And just as a special for us, and one night only- they are going to leave the light on!

Can you believe that??

Ok I have an FNG question for the couples out there that camp.  I know we still have 80 days but we are starting to think about packing our bikes.  We have taken several multi day trips before but not to include camping (I always take a blanket since I am weird about hotel ones Embarrassed).  Do you couples take two sleeping bags and bed rolls?  I have my backpack mummy bag and liner with backpack tent.  I do not have a backseat just a luggage rack which normally holds our change out gear (differnt thinkness of gloves, rain gear, face masks, night goggles, stuff that we need to get to).  Not trying to get personal just trying to figure out bedding required.

If you are taking the Southern route you may consider minimal lightweight bedding.

Perfect, that is what I was thinking since we will only be camping in RC, AZ & NM and then turning back Cry.  We didnt want to assume anything.  I guess worst case we can go buy another bag if the weather changed on us.

Be safe and keep the rubber down.

Hi All, Prado Park in on Hwy 83 aka Euclid, couple miles south of Chino, Ca. Chino Airport is at the corner of Euclid and Merrill. Flo's resteraunt, spelling ugh, for their breakfast. I have been eating there for years. Planes of Fame Air Museum is also at Chino Airport, east of Flo's about an 1/8th of a mile at the corner of Merrill and Cal Aero Drive, if anybody would like to visit the museum let me know, here is link to Museum, www.planesoffame.org  See you all in RC!
