I rode with Rolling Thunder last year and I thought it was supposed to be non-politcal?
The stated goal and objectives are and should continue to be acting to get congress, (which ever party is in power), to continue to get POWs accounted for, not to allow politicians to mess up the cause! What cha think?

it is supposed to be about the pow;s/mia's and accountabilty. but like all things --people show up n ride to show off or say they did it , and politicians will always use what is popular to further thier endeavours. we -must be the ones who stay focused n keep true .

Joe Manchin, former Gov of WV ,now Senator, a Motorcyclist , rode with us in the past. I wish Obama and other political leaders on both sides of the isle would support whole hardly our efforts to carry out the Mission Statement.Bush when he was president had RT leadership for breakfast in the white house

I for one was pretty unimpressed with rolling thunder. In my opinion, and I have been riding for just a few years, there is a better way to convey a message. I saw people holding their kids ears, kids crying from the noise of idiots wracking their pipes up against the rev limiters. It was ... well, I'll not go there. I understand the need to convey a message, but I think this wasn't the right way. Again, just my opinion. Flame on, I have fireproof underwear. I love my RFTW family and what the mission was.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome that this many motorcyclists can gather at once. I just think there were errors made.

UNFORTUNATELY -I THINK ROLLING THUNDER MAY HAVE LOST SOME OF ITS THUNDER THRU THE YEARS. MANY RIDE JUST SO THEY CAN SAY THEY DID , SHOW OFFS . IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SLOWER ORDERLY DEMONSTRATION RIDE. AND SOME USE IT FOR THIER OWN POLITICAL GAIN. BUT RFTW MAINTAINS ITS DIGNITY BY WHAT WE DO AND HOW WE DO IT.

Being my first time I had no idea what to expect at RT. I noticed it was not the same as being with just the people from RFTW. I saw no riders thanking and no people thanking riders. I know its a different idea and not the same, but the news talks about them at the Tomb of the Unknown and other things, but its not them.
So to make up for it, we started thanking all the policemen and the military personnel that were there. I was so used to thanking people, it just did not seem right to quit just because our Mission was over.
Thanks RFTW family!!!!

Repost of something I posted elsewhere....
Sarah Palin was speaking at Rolling Thunder as their invited guest, not as someone running for office. Rolling Thunder is and always has been a Political event. Rolling Thunder was started as a way to tell the politician's that we want full accountability for our POW/MIA's. It is NOT a parade through DC as some thing, but a political demonstration, thus any and all politicians are welcomed by Artie to speak.
That said RFTW is not political, but a cross country ride to spread awareness of the POW/MIA issue to the heartland of America. Just because RFTW riders ride in Rolling Thunder does not mean RFTW is involved in the politics. The riders are there as individuals and may or may not support any politician that is speaking.
Personally I say thank you Sarah Palin for being at Rolling Thunder and supporting their cause.

RFTW was there, in the Pentagon parking lot and on the protest route. We escorted about 100 riders from the host hotel to Pentagon North lot. Oh yeah RFTW was there

From all that I have read, Rolling Thunder parade is a protest ride. Definitely political in nature. As for more politicians getting involved...they may want to stay at arms-length because it is a protest. The idea is to get the message across to all politicians and the general public. Not to point fingers at those in the Capitol for not joining in the protest. |

You are right for most of the riders did not acknowledge and thank as we have.. but I will say this, My father and I chose not to ride in RT but instead took to the side lines to watch and snap pictures after a few hundred bikes went down Constitution Ave all of a sudden one bike pulled over to this young man in a wheel chair missing both his legs he parked his bike got off and hugged that young man and thanked him for his sevice right in front of me I almost cried.. wait I think I did... then it started many more bikes followed suit, and then there was this other older man, I asked him where he served he told me "Battle of the Bulge young man, D-Day... ya know NormandyI was like WOW'ed ... and then he pointed to his Legion of Honor medal he just got last November.... then it started again... bikes coming by and Saluting him and stopping to shake his hand.. not many but a few.. and this man Saluted every Flag that past for the length of RT... a very moving moment if you ask me. but y'all are right RT is not what WE are about which is why I will only do RFTW because some where along the way we touch lives in person and that I will never forget as I touched a young mans life at the VA Hospital at least... I hope I did but he let me know by saying Thank you to me for caring enough to speak with him.... oh rats here come the tears again.... grrrr |

The purpose of Rolling Thunder is to make sure that our Government does not forget those that were left behind. Yes it is loud, and yes there are a lot of different groups there, but all of them are there to support POW MIA awareness. For some it is a ride to honor the fallen and sometimes forgotten. For others it is a protest. It is not recognized as a protest, maybe if it was we would get a little more public notice. The people that do and support RFTW are on a mission and we do support Rolling Thunder. It is now and has always been political, because we have to make sure the politicians do not forget that they sent people to war and have not done enough to bring them home. In 2005 my first RFTW and first Rolling Thunder, the press stated on all networks, and Fox News Channel, and CNN that there were several thousand motorcycles and riders in DC that year. The actual count was well over 500,000. I wrote all of them and complained, Fox News was the only one that responded, and the corrected the numbers on Tuesday. Of course Tony Snow was a friend of mine. When he went to work for President Bush, not only did Bush welcome the leadership of Rolling Thunder to the White House two years in a row, every one of the news reports had the numbers right, and they have been getting it right since then. As for Governor Palin being at Rolling Thunder this year, she was there as a Blue Star Mother, and spoke as one, not as a politician seeking votes, and she did thank all of us for what we had done and have been doing for 24 years. Next year is the 25th Rolling Thunder. Never forget, and if we ever stop showing up our Government will forget those that have been left behind. At 500,000 bikes there are really only 5 motorcycles for every 1 person that has been left behind since World War I.
Climbing off the soap box now. Thanks everyone for riding, and joining the family. Bounce |

Yes, of course it's political. Who but the politicians can provide the accounting and bring them home? And I think the proper term for RT would be "demonstration." As in a demonstration of our resolve to demand an accounting for all POW/MIA's. We won't go away until the mission is accomplished, or they shovel dirt in our faces. Even the latter won't do it, because I've arranged for someone younger to take my place

GREAT POINT--AS IN RFTW --WE NEED TO BRING YOUNGER BLOOD AND PASS THE TORCH--TO MAKE SURE THIS MISSION CONTINUES -AS IT WAS ENVISIONED. STAYING TRUE TO THE MISSION STATEMENT. WE ARE LOOSING SO MANY --. THE YEARS ARE CATCHING UP. HOPEFULLY MY SON AND GRANDSONS WILL FOLLOW ME.
