parts man a oversize steel toe boot might be your cheapest option. There is a lot of shifting in the pack for Harley guys. Now for those FNG's not riding Harleys it is throttle control and double clutching that works best. My Royal Star having a VMAX engine really does not slow down much when shifting from fourth to third, in fact it will take off like a rocket if done wrong, but grabbing the clutch and letting it coast down a little does work, not sure if that will work with a Harley, but it does work well with metric bikes. Hope you heal quick, and like I said a good Ace Bandage and a bigger show might be a good choice, I have a heal shifter on my star and it helps too.At least my toes aren't too sore at the end of a day.

PARTS MAN, Get a piece of foam and cut a piece that will fit inside your sock over the top of your toes and and top of foot for about an inch. taper it and get it where your toes don't move up to touch your shoe as you up shift and you can shift up and down without hurting your broken toe.

Rivco are great people to work with. I bought my flag mount for the 2010 Ultra from them. If you ride with the Patriot Guard they will also give you a 10% discount.

My dad said the biggest mistake Harley ever made was back in '53 when they moved that dadburn shifter off the side of the tank down there where you had to shift with your foot.

Parts Man -
Check out Rivco. That's what I had on my Wing. Quality product that worked well. A Google should get you a hit for a Web site.

Partsman, The advice about a lot of shifting is very true. Also the advice about riding in a pack is not the place to learn to use a toe / heel shifter is true. If you can borrow a pair of steel toed boots and try riding I would suggest that route. Go to a mall or other large parking lot where you can practice shifting thru all gears up AND down MANY times. If that works for you then either "borrow" the boots for the run or go get your own set. If it doesn't try a toe / heel shifter and practice, practice, practice before doing it live in a pack. Missing a gear in a pack is not fun. I did it a couple of years ago riding 2up on a wing and almost had to buy new shorts. Good luck. |

Sounds like a very very good excuse to buy a new ride with a heel-toe shifter..

very good point - IF- someone is not used to a heel shifter - being one second behind someone doing 70mph is NOT the time to learn, lol.... like I said before - last year during that 10 days, I down/up shifted more that I have in the past few years - total, lol
